Philosophy
Ceramics spun from the earth, resonating with the universe.
01 — A devotion to earth
Raw earth —a material like no other.
The work of Kimitoshi Yamashita begins with raw earth.
Not refined. Not processed.
Earth as it is — taken directly from the land.
He insists on this:
that each work carries within it
the raw, living force of the earth itself.
The character of the land.
Its resistance. Its texture. Its color.
Each of these becomes the expression of a single piece —
and no two will ever be the same.
"I take the raw earth in my hands, and listen — to the voice of soil, water, and fire. That is where everything begins."
02 — Wavelength Treatment and EM
Infusing soil and water with an invisible force.
Kimitoshi Yamashita introduces effective microorganisms (EM)
into the raw earth,
and applies a unique "wavelength treatment"
to both soil and water. This process — carried out with specialized equipment —
is not merely a technique. It is a practice born from years of deep inquiry:
a way of drawing out the fullest energy
held within earth and water.Through wavelength treatment,
the clay is transformed —
from a physical material
into something that carries energy within it.Some who drink from the finished works say the taste changes.
Perhaps that, too, is a quiet expression
of the energy held within.
03 — The journey of a work, from beginning to form
A creative process in resonance
with all things in the universe.
Before entering the creative process,
Kimitoshi Yamashita first purifies the studio, and meditates.
No one else is permitted inside.
Only when distraction has been released —
when the self has been set aside as much as possible —
does he finally face the earth.
Not "I am making."
But "I am being made to make."
Within that feeling,
form emerges from the unconscious.
As though resonating with the energy of all things,
guided by something vast and nameless.
He erases every afterimage, all at once.
To bring something entirely new into being.
What Kimitoshi Yamashita seeks
is not the expression of a craftsman,
but that of an artist.
Because it is born from a place
beyond the reach of consciousness —
that single bowl
can never be made again.
04 — The message within each work
Beyond tradition —
questioning a new set of values.
The works of Kimitoshi Yamashita are beautiful vessels —and at the same time, a single question.
Unbound by tradition,
they offer a quiet dissent against existing values.
Weaving together the traditions of Japan
and the sensibilities of the modern world,
each piece holds within it
the beauty of nature and a hope for what is yet to come.
A finished work is not mere matter.
It is a singular existence in this world —
born of a dialogue between earth, fire, and water,
resonating with the energy of all things.
Where the beauty of nature and the rhythm of all life converge —
there, the ceramics of Kimitoshi Yamashita exist.
And yet — no matter how deeply artistic —
every work he creates is born as a vessel for tea.
Large or small.
Heavy or light.
Marked by a beautiful crack.
It is only when someone lifts that vessel
and drinks tea from it —
that the work, at last, is complete.
